Studies on the Factors Influencing Rooting of Korean Azalea (Rhododendron yedoense var . poukhanense) Propagated in a Closed Moist Room

Abstract
Rooting of Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense cuttings was investigated in a closed moist room in connection to influences of rooting promotion substances, cutting media and cutting times.
The best rooting result was obtained when the cuttings were soaked for five seconds in a mixed solution of 2,500§·/§¤ indolebutyric acid(IBA) and 2,500§·/§¤ naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). Soaking the cuttings into the solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) with pH 10.5 or 2 normals of sulfuric acid (2N-H©üSO©þ), for 10 seconds to respective solution, gave more or less the same rooting results to the rooting ability of dipping the cuttings into a single solution of IBA or NAA.
Out of cutting media tested, the media prepared by mixing 50% of peat moss and 50% of perlite by volume gave the first place rooting results while the media made by mixing 50% of clay into 50% of sand brought in the second place rooting results.
For the time of cutting, July 15 gave the best rooting results while no noticeable differences were shown among the checked cutting times from July 25 to August 25. Cutting made on September 15 showed the worst rooting results.
